Janice Johnson

I am the Manager, Facilitation and Process Design, in the Centre for Teaching, Learning & Technology at the University of British Columbia, and an IAF Certified Professional Facilitator.  My background, experience, academic and professional training is in snow avalanche safety, geography and environmental studies, adult education, and facilitation. I worked for the BC provincial government in the field of snow avalanche safety for 12 years early in my career. I am a sessional instructor in the Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education Program at the University of the Fraser Valley, and a private consultant. As a consultant, I offer services in the areas of facilitation and facilitator training, adult teaching and learning, instructor training, and curriculum development.

I took my first Instructional Skills Workshop when I worked for the BC provincial government in 1980 (many years ago…!) I have been an ISW Facilitator for 20 years, and a Facilitator Development Workshop (FDW) Trainer since 1996. I have co-directed ISW Facilitator Development Workshops for over 10 years. I am currently one of the Co-Chairs of the ISW International Advisory Committee.

My areas of interest include the changes expert practitioners go through, as they become teachers of their practice; the relationships between our beliefs and our actions, as facilitators and as teachers; and how we become wise mentors of our colleagues, inviting them to grow and develop in the best ways that they can. I enjoy gardening, fly fishing, camping, genealogy, and pets, especially chocolate Labs!
