Date(s) - May 29, 2019 - Jun 02, 2019
Region: British Columbia
Institution: Naramata Centre
Theme: Being our Authentic Selves – Practicing the Art, Craft and Science of the ISW
In 2019, we are celebrating 40 years of the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) Program and Network, now offered at places around the world.
This year we return to Naramata Centre for our Spring Institute for ISW facilitators and trainers.
The Naramata Centre was the site for our residential ISW Spring Institutes for 30+ years, before this event moved to other places in British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia.
In honour of our 40th anniversary year, we have asked Jeanie Cockell and Joan McArthur-Blair, two of our ISW pioneers, to serve as lead program planners and process facilitators for this event.
Registration is open: https://events.eply.com/ISWSpringInstitute2019
Joan and Jeanie bring their passion for ISW as long-term facilitators and trainers to the 2019 Spring Institute. Together they have more than 50 years of experience in higher education and have taken that experience into their consulting practice.
They specialize in collaboratively designing strategies to surface the wisdom of individuals, groups and organizations in order for them to build positive futures and to respond effectively to change.
They are authors, facilitators, speakers and thought leaders. They have authored many articles on appreciative inquiry and leadership. They have also published two books: Appreciative Inquiry in Higher Education: A Transformative Force and Building Resilience with Appreciative Inquiry: A Leadership Journey through Hope, Despair, and Forgiveness.
The ISW Spring Institute is designed for new and experienced facilitators and trainers across the ISW network. The Institute provides participants with opportunities to share their insights and challenges and to draw on each other’s experiences and expertise within a collegial environment.
As in past years, all participants serve as resources in this community-building institute by providing ideas and suggestions within a variety of activities. We will use both small and whole group discussion and a range of presentation formats. Some activities will be pre-planned; others will evolve from an ongoing needs assessment as the event progresses. Please come prepared to share ideas, innovations, problems, philosophies and visions related to our theme and to the ISW Program and Network.
Where You Will Be
The ISW Spring Institute will be at Naramata Centre in the village of Naramata, about 20 km north of Penticton. You can fly via Vancouver to Penticton with Air Canada or via Calgary to Penticton with WestJet. Your travel from Penticton to Naramata will be by taxi or rental car.
You may be able to share a taxi from the airport with other participants. More information about travel options will be in the participant letter sent to registrants.
Naramata is a lovely village on the east shore of Okanagan Lake and only a few minutes’ drive to the nearby Okanagan Valley wine area.
We will be living and learning together in a relaxed atmosphere of good humour and fun. Our accommodation in Maple Courts and Cottage Court Cabins is simple but comfortable.
Our residences are a 5-minute walk to the meeting room in McLaren Hall, and a similar distance to our dining area in Columbia Hall. You can walk a couple of minutes from our meeting room and be at the lakeshore.
Additional information about the setting, event logistics, and transportation options will be discussed in more detail in the participant letter sent after you register.
Although there will be time in the day’s activities to relax, there will be sessions scheduled in the evenings as well as in the mornings and afternoons.
There is complimentary Wi-Fi at Naramata Centre.
Please arrive during the day on Wednesday, May 29 so you can get settled into your residence before dinner and our evening activities begin.
If you are flying in from a distance, you may want to arrive Tuesday afternoon or evening. Please indicate if you will be arriving on Tuesday when you register. There is an additional fee for those staying at the Centre on Tuesday night.
You will need to arrange your own meals prior to our opening dinner on Wednesday evening. There are cafes in Naramata within an easy walking distance from the Centre. Or if you have a car, you might want to explore the surrounding area prior to our opening activities.
Sunday, June 2, before lunch. If you are catching a flight later in the day, you can have lunch in the village after our Institute ends.
All Fees below are in Canadian Dollars (CAD) and include the program, accommodation and meals.
When registering, you may request a single room, but we may not be able to provide single rooms to all who request them. The number of single rooms available depends on our total number of registrants. We will confirm those in single rooms, closer to the event, and the additional single-room fee of $200 CAD will be billed separately.
